Making the most of social media during lockdown

Social media can be a great tool to help you communicate with current and potential customers and social media engagement has never been higher with a 61% increase since lockdown began! This means that at the moment, whilst you may have more spare time, it’s a good idea to invest in setting up, or growing, your social media. However, in order to help you get the most from your social media efforts, we’ve listed a few top tips, below. Check them out and let us know which ones you’re implementing.

So, first of all, why should you use social media? Having a presence on social media gives you a free of charge marketing platform which is great for brand awareness, with the only cost associated being the time it takes you to update your page. You can chat directly with your customers and generate new leads without even having to leave your home!

To help with this, we’re going to run through the different social media platforms you might want to take advantage of:

Twitter: Twitter is an online news and social networking site where people communicate in short messages called tweets, always under 280 characters. Tweeting is posting short messages for anyone who follows you on Twitter, with the hope that your messages are useful and interesting to someone in your audience. Unlike most social media platforms, Twitter is used by people personally and professionally so is ideal if you want to target domestic and commercial contracts.

LinkedIn: LinkedIn is a social network specifically designed for people to connect professionally. This is the perfect platform for any flooring fitters that may want commercial contracts but isn’t the best platform if you focus solely on the domestic market.

Instagram: Instagram is a very simple platform to use and one that is great for builders, tradespeople and local contractors as it gives you a great opportunity to show how much you’ve transformed homes and buildings.

Facebook: You might use Facebook personally, but if you want to use it professionally, it’s best to set up a business page. Here, you can have reviews, news update, prices, case studies, videos and answer any questions potential customers might have. If you aren’t ready for a website, this is a perfect middle ground! If you do a lot of work on domestic projects, this can be a great way to get new leads!

Social Media – The Basics
Regardless of whether you’re a social media expert or just setting up for the first time, following these simple rules helps avoid the most common pitfalls:

  • If unsure, don’t post it. Err on the side of caution when posting to social networks. If you think a post might cause complaints or offence it’s better to be safe than sorry so don’t post it
  • Be thoughtful and polite. Many social media users have got into trouble simply by failing to observe basic good manners online – it’s a simple one but it’s easy to fall victim to
  • Don’t make promises without checking you can do this first. For example, promising a customer you’ll come and see them that day if you’re already on a job. Some social networks are very public, so don’t make any commitments or promises without checking that you can deliver on it
  • Don’t argue with customers! Someone might come onto your social media page to make a complaint of some kind. Try and make sure this isn’t done publicly. To take a conversation offline, respond with: “Hi xxx, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please can you DM / send us your contact phone number / email address as we’d like your help in order to investigate further?”

What are the biggest social media mistakes?
To make sure your social media remains professional looking at all times, we’ve pulled together the following faux-pas for social media:

  • Not checking tweets. Make sure any content you post is spelt correctly, contains links where necessary (like back to your website!) and has no errors in the information
  • Inappropriate images. Social media posts with images always get more likes, comments and shares. Make sure the picture is relevant, clear and appropriate to post on a professional social media page
  • Not remaining professional. Although it can be easy to forget social media is work, make sure you remain professional at all times
  • Posting from the incorrect account. If you have a personal and a professional social media account, for example, Twitter, make sure you don’t get the two mixed up
