Barclay’s House, a grand listed building on Grey Street in Newcastle, has recently been refurbished into high-quality offices, reflecting the Victorian history of the building but with a modern twist.
The sought after building, which had previously been the Royal Turks Head hotel, has been subject to many proposals in recent years, such as being transformed into student accommodation for the city’s growing student population.
After The Hanro Group received approval to convert the building, interior design company Holsta Group was appointed to create a space that would help businesses grow and thrive in Newcastle. Holsta Group turned to CFS to supply the flooring, and chose Compilation broadloom and Inspiration carpet tiles for the refurbishment.
For the space, which covers three floors of the building and a large Victorian staircase, CFS Inspiration in Pebble was initially selected for the offices and communal areas as the carpet tiles are created specifically for premium commercial environments. The offices will be available for shorter term leases available as well as traditional, longer leases, meaning that they may need refurbishing more regularly. Carpet tiles lend themselves to this application as if one part of the floor covering becomes damaged or stained, a single tile can be replaced as opposed to the entire floor. This means that any business that moves into the office space will be guaranteed the benefits of long lasting flooring that will continue to feel new, regardless of how many times the space has previously been leased.
Complementing the CFS Inspiration carpet tiles, Compilation broadloom was chosen for the large Victorian staircase. Available in contemporary and sophisticated colours, the project benefitted from the Zinc coloured flooring that suited the interior design choices of the project, as well as providing a high quality product.
David Mulligan, Director of Holsta, explained: “The flooring is absolutely fantastic. That’s why we chose to order the extra 200m2 of tiles for the staircase. The whole process has been such a success – from the look and feel of the space, to the ease of installation. We’re excited for the companies that move in to what is sure to be a great office environment.”
Adam Serfontein, Managing Director of Hanro that own Barclay’s House, said: “We think that Grey Street is heading for a new high and Barclay’s House is in a great location. For smaller businesses with growth potential there is a real value in ‘clustering’ and we think our new offices will provide them with the location they need.
“What we really want to do is create a buzz in the building with scale up businesses who can be complementary to one another.”
